Pour me some milk!

Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce the best friend of cappuccino, the inseparable friend of him – café latte!

The name café latte has its origin in the Italian language. The world latte is milk in Italian. It is named this way because café latte has more milk than in cappuccino (about 200 ml) and the foamed milk is only on the top of this coffee (this layer has usually 1 cm).

What is really characteristic about café latte is the serving. It should be served in tall, transparent glass on the saucer with long teaspoon adapted to high vessels.

In many cafeterias in countries other than Italy, on the menu among others coffees, we can find coffee named latte. When we order it, we will get our café latte, but be careful while ordering in Italy! I visited this lovely country a few years ago and while sightseeing in Pisa, I decided with my friend that one thing we need, while looking at the Leaning Tower of Pisa, is the coffee. So we found the most Italian Trattoria within easy reach and we ordered our favorite beverage – one latte for my friend and one cappuccino for me. But I was the only one who has got her coffee. Why? Because my friend didn’t order one. In Italy, while ordering a latte, you will get the glass of hot milk! You have to underline that you want a café latte. Italians are really literal in the menu in their restaurants. When in the menu is written that you can have a tomato salad, don’t expect any additions like sauce, lettuce or other vegetables. You will get a salad made only of tomatoes (true story!).

Worth knowing is also the fact that the term latte art, often associated with this type of coffee, has nothing to do with café latte because it is impossible to create the picture while pouring the coffee and milk. Latte art can be done on the cappuccino.

Want to drink your coffee like real Italian? Here’s the hint: the cappuccino and the café latte are drunk in the morning, usually for breakfast.

May your coffee taste great!
